Unless you have a real use case for v4 drivers, stick with the traditional type 3 driver.

Type 4 drivers only support Windows, if you use them on a server they do not download to the client like a Type 3 driver would. If the client has the driver installed, it will use it; otherwise it uses a generic point and print driver, which can give you some odd output depending on the file type. Any shared print queue using a Type 4 driver cannot be used by another OS so any Macs, Linux, or mobile devices using the queue won't be able to access the printer.

In theory, Type 4 drivers are a great idea: processor independent, able to be directly embedded into an application, and able to work outside of the the general print spooler. In reality, they're more trouble than worth.

Brand irrelevant - if you can install the correct specific driver then that is the best thing to do.
