    Canon IR-2220i Print Quality Issues

I've got a Canon IR-220i - about 450k - all is good except that when I changed the Drum Unit - FB5-5020, the image quality was off-set - meaning, that the image at the Top was nice and Dark, and as you got lower on the page it became lighter and lighter. Put the Old Drum in and the Copy Quality is even throughout the Copy.

Replaced the Drum Unit twice - same results. The Transfer Roller was changed (new), along with the Fuser Film(also, new). Tray Feed is all new. Made sure that the Glass & Mirrors were clean. Tried cranking the Image Density, nothing happening.

Doesn't make a difference in quality whether running off the Glass, or thru the Doc Feed.

    Any suggestions? Greatly appreciated.

Good suggestion. The Laser was cleaned, too - again, the Old Drum works fine, its when I put in the new Drum that I have an issue.

The image from the Drum is not good. I have changed the Drum Unit twice - using OEM Drum Units.

Tech2002,You said "I've got a Canon IR-220i - about 450k - all is good except that when I changed the Drum Unit - FB5-5020". The only number I have for the drum is Canon drum unit GPR-6 ,6648A004AA. Is that what you are using?

That's very strange. You would think that it is a drum issue because the old one works fine. Have you tried either of the two new drums in another machine to see if they exhibit the same problem? Have you tried a working drum from another unit to see if it works? Let us know.

Don't have another machine to use either way with the Drums. I am ordering still a third Drum Unit, coming in from another location - thinking that it might be a bad batch that I've run into with the current supplier.

From the Old to the New Drum - it is night and day - The older having the better image quality.

Go figure - I have never seen anything like it. Not unless it was a bad Drum in any machine I've worked on.

Thanks - I wish I knew what the issue was. Never had this happen before.

[QUOTE=Canon.Tech;242267]As a quick fix or fault finding fit the new drum cylinder to the old/working drum unit.

I'll give that a try if the Drum Unit they send me does the same thing as the other two I've tried. What about the roller that sits along side the Drum? If that is worn do you know if that would make a difference long term?

This isn't a machine I normally work on - Sharp is my main system. Having said this, I have found that the work I do do on Canon's, with my limited knowledge, is ten-times better then the tech's I've seen from Ikon or Canon Direct, or even some small shops that do Canons. Some of them think the Canon is just an oversized HP Printer. I keep on seeing them put HP Feed Rollers into the Feed Sections of Canons. They may fit, but they don't always work.

The deal I have found with Canon's is that, it's a good box, but sometimes, the systems can get really complicated to repair. More work to do on a Canon then for the same job on a Sharp. But then, I don't work on Canons all the time.

I usually have someone who does the work on the Canon's for me that I have out in the field. Here, I'm just trying to get through what should have been an easy re-build. All is good except the Drum's imaging issue.

What would you use to clean the Charge - Alcohol? What about the Drum Blade? Change that, as well?
