cd390 code when battery dies with the battery fix software installed c454e

    Gentlemen

I had my first battery fail on the mfpb. I was able to get the customer running temporarily but as soon as they turned off the copier. The code would appear. I changed the battery (not fun). Reset the board with the 145 tar file. Recovered the data and the machine came back to life. I didn't loose any data or have to set up the copier. The clock is off by about a month. I bought a Panasonic battery from digikey. Much better than the "tpm has changed" without the software update. I ordered a better solder sucker. The one I used made getting the solder off the board so I could slide in the new battery much tougher.

Congratulations! You have to be very quick to solder batteries (without causing them to explode). That could have gone a lot worse. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
    1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
    2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
    3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
    4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
    5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

Yeah the batteries got a little hot. Got lucky. I looked at some of the other posts. Some of the techs did some exotic things to keep the original battery in place while they soldered in a new one. The thinking was if there no voltage going to the board it would be ruined. That was not the case at least in my situation.

It's not that the board would be per se ruined. Below a certain voltage some data is lost that cannot be recovered by a tech. But if you measured less than 2.5vdc at any time that data is just lost, so there's nothing more to lose.

Apparently the MFP board Reset software can restore some base values. Good to know. =^..^=

Back in the day when OEM's actually designed copiers to last a long time and most likely out live the back-up battery the board would have 2 battery cutouts on board. This way you could install a new battery before de-soldering the bad one to remove so no data was lost. I know that Sharp did this.

On the Mitas, the PM indicator: "Oilcan" would blink. Endusers would call us for maintenance. I would check the mechanical counter against the paper log, to see it wasn't due yet.

Then I would notice the blinking. A proper maintenance light is ON solid, but a blinking one means dead backup battery. These analog machines did not have much backup data to lose, but it did track the maintenance interval. I installed a lot of 3vdc NiCad batteries onto DC-152re, DC-1655, DC-1755. I could get them with pre-soldered pigtails for a less risky installation. =^..^=

I was getting half a volt on the old battery. Besides the the cd390, the touch panel would freeze up. If I was able to get it to recover data. I had to turn off the copier, with half a volt it forgot everything. All the years fixing copiers, this is the first time I've had to replace the lithium battery.

There for a while we had customers that discovered that their machine was using miniscule amounts of power maintaining the backup battery. Some of those folks would unplug the machine from the wall at night or (OMG!) put the machine on a 20A mechanical timer to cut all power during the off hours (remember: these were analog devices ... no HDDs).

It only took 6 months of that to kill the battery (or blow a power supply).

I had one of those heart-attack moments around 1700 hrs one evening, when I was just wrapping things up to go home and the machine just died right in front of me. The enduser says: " Oh, that's nothing, we've got it on a timer. See?" =^..^=
