[Misc] Ricoh not accessing USB drive

I have an Ricoh MP 9003 and the customer is using a marketing 120MB USB device with their logo on it to scan files to. The Ricoh recognizes it is plugged in to the slot but can not access the drive. I have reformatted it multiple different ways but no change. I've used other drives in that slot, all different formats and sizes from 14MB to 128GB and they have all worked, so I know the slot works.
I plugged the marketing drive into a Sharp MFP with no problems, I was able to scan and print from it. I then plugged it into an Ricoh MP C4053 and it would not work just like the MP 9003.
I looked at the properties and changed permissions but I can't think of anything else to do. Why does every other USB drive work in this slot but this one? They've used them in the past with no problems. This is a new batch of drives they just reordered and now can't use on their Ricoh MFPs. Any suggestions would be helpful.

I don't think the drives were purchased from a different source. I tried FAT32 and it doesn't matter what is on the drive, it won't access it but does recognize it's plugged in.

It's probably just not compatible, this happens. Years ago my boss ordererd a bunch of sticks with our logo on it and these refused to work with Ricoh, too

I think it depends on the sticks internal memory controller, some are not compatible with the chipsets on the panel PCB.

Yes. I just perused Ricoh documentation, and they state that they must be formatted to FAT 16 or FAT 32, AND that all drives will not be compatible. I have run into 1 or 2 over the years that simply would not work.

Try a drive from a different manufacturer.

Seems you answered your question multiple times before you even posted it here.

I tried two USB's i carry and they both work, one is formatted FAT and the other is FAT32. The customer's drive does work in another manufacturer's MFP down the hall, it just doesn't work in any Ricoh I've tried.

I know it's stupid, I have run into this before also and it makes no sense. One case did make some sense though and it was a flash drive that came from a linux box that was formatted fat32. Reformatting in windows or Linux did not change anything. I completed a low level format on it and then reformatted to fat32 in windows and it worked.

On an interesting side note, I have a 2gb sd card that won't do ricoh firmware, but works everywhere else. I also have a 16gb sd formatted fat32 that works fine all of the time. That's Ricoh for you.

Most of these "marketing' drives with company logos on them on usually extremely inexpensive (El Cheapo) devices. They work with Windows read/write algorithms for awhile but most MFP do not use multiple algorithms. THey make one attempt to read the folder structure and if that fails, they error. THe 2 you have are most likely either Sandisk, PNY, Samsung, Panasonic or another quality brand.

Back around 6 years ago when 64 gig flashdrives were probably around $100, I bought 3 from Wish.com for $10 each. Junk. I was able to get about 3 writes on each before they failed. A friend of mine gave me 3 promotional 4gigers because I hooked up his wireless printer. One failed almost immediately, the other 2 still working though.

In all my cases though the media didn't work in anything. His at least work in some things. I hear what is being said though. Most likely the promotional drives are el-cheapo-delux. It might be worth running a scan on them to see how bad they really might be so you have something to show the customer to vindicate yourself.

I think it's also funny how poor the write speeds of these "cheapos" usually are, not shure why somebody buys a 256gb stick with 2mb/s write performance.

try to format the sd/usb key with panasonic "SD card formatter"(its free, seek on google), if not the law so, then it is incompatible, there is nothing to do
