For the C2800. I'm assuming that the display also says "Please wait"? Yes, that's likely HDD, but also try re-seating the fax option, and HDD connectors
I'd also suspect HDD in the C5000.
Disconnect hard drives in both machines and see if basic copier functionality returns to be sure, then replace if so.

I would check power supply outputs.

1 5v output of 3 being dead will lock the machine.
Saw a pinched 5v tx clock signal wire cause a total lockdown with "please wait".
Didn't find it until I tried replacing the scanner unit.
Why do they call it common sense?

If it were common, wouldn't everyone have it?

I would try to format hdd with SP5832-2,-3,-4, -7 and -8 first. If they indeed had a power outage chances are the machine got cut off in the middle of a job, and data "residue" on the hdd then prevents it from reaching ready state.

Just try the "IMH" format, normally springs to life and you won't lose any settings. Make sure you purge any print jobs. Can be due to bad data sent to the machine (As stated already!)
