    waiting for print data ...

    Hi guys

I have a MP161 that show "Waiting for print data..." after printing a print job. It will then clear but nothing will print. It does this intermittently. The customer has been complaining about slow printing and i think this maybe causing the problem.

    Thanks

Try memory clearing the NCS (Network Control System).
Now and then the NIC speed just gets stuck on a go slow until it's reset.

    • Make a note / print off a network config sheet first though as it will reset the network settings back to factory defaults.
    • This is a general fix that works across most of the Ricoh range.

Are they using the correct print driver? If the printing problem is application specific, that's what I'd check next.
It wouldn't hurt to check the firmware, too. And while it is rare, if time permits check the controller to make sure it is the one for that machine and not for the 20 cpm machine, they are just different enough to cause some really random problems.
This might be off topic, but I'm still curious - does that machine have a wireless network adapter? There used to be a wireless network query or request or something that would every once in a while cascade out of control, causing extreme print slowdowns. I forget exactly what it was called, but it went something like (some specific wireless networking term) Storms.
On the other hand, the last time I saw any MFD hooked up to the network by wireless was some time ago, so this might not even be a problem anymore. But it was quite annoying then.

        Hi

No, the machine is on a wired lan. The firmware is up-to-date. There are 4 pc's. 1 is running Windows 8 but i am not using the win8 driver. I downloaded the latest one for that machine.

Thanks for the info so far.

There is mostly a problem with either the network cabling or the port on the switch that the machine is connected to. If the data stream is interupted while receiving a print job, this will happen.

Quick check is to have the customer put another machine there. If the same problem occurs it is the network. Another test is to use a cross-over cable and connect your laptop directly. If you can print from your laptop, it is the network. When using a laptop, test it over 30 to 45 minutes.

We had the same problem with a customer for almost a month. It was holding up their signing a lease for new equipment. We updated or replaced every thing on the machine that could cause the problem, including the controller board. Last week they tryed a different printer and it did the same thing. They signed the lease. Friday they replace the main 32 port switch. NO problem since. Previously they were havlng to cycle power 8 to 10 times a day.

i have seen ip conflicts cause this, unplug from network and verify there are no others with the same ip

I just had this same issue the beginning of the week on my office's MP 171: the issue in our case was a batch of corrupted PDFs: they all came from the same source, but were not quite right. I saved the files as postscript files, rebuilt the PDFs and tried printing again and this time they worked. Spooling to the MFP from a PCL 5 driver the original file was 258MB, while the rebuilt was about half of that.
