    BP-70C31 Drum Cartridge Error

We have this machine in the field that every couple weeks comes up with a weird error about the drum units not being installed. (unable to attach photo)

It states "After turning off the power, install the drum unit.(Y,M,C,Bk)"

Customer restarts the machine, and it's good to go for a few weeks.

Tech support has never seen it, and aren't giving us good ideas to go on.

If it was one, I'd assume the switch for that particular color is bad, but all four? Could be a wiring harness, PCU, or even something with a power board. Any one else experienced this issue?

On the color C402SC we had similar issues.

But if it happens again, I would check out the drum detection switches.

    Sim 30-1

Initial detection switch Micro switch Detects initial state in the process unit:

    DR_INIT_C Initial detection switch C
    DR_INIT_K Initial detection switch K
    DR_INIT_M Initial detection switch M
    DR_INIT_Y Initial detection switch Y
    DR_DETECT_ALL Drum cartridge detection

Also, you can find those switches in the service manual in 4-17 part 8: Switches.

There, you can swap them out, check out the harness.
    Good luck!

**EDIT** I read in a hurry. Looks like you did what I would have done. NVM this post. :| **

**EDIT 2** Did you check CN34 in the PCU PWB? Check continuity.**

I had this happen within a couple of days of a new install. I pulled the charge knob then pulled the drums out slightly and reseated them. Issue hasn't returned.

      Good luck

Look for the Existence detect plate A in the parts guide, it looks like there is a series of connecting strips on the part that locks the drums and devs in place, it looks like they are connected in series, hence why it says all drums on the message.
Networking skills are advantageous but use of a 3m vacuum cleaner is essential

This info isn't for this problem but another "install drum" error that can occur at set-up.

The waste toner box that comes with the machine is different than the boxed BP-HB700 (Sharp calls this the maintenance waste box).

Someone installed a waste toner box off the shelf for some reason at set-up and when the machine was booted up it said to install the drum/drums.

My notes also show C1-20, drum coated and no charge rollers. My notes are horrible.

There is a bar in the original WTB that isn't on the boxed WTB.

Funny enough, the first time our tech went out there noticed that, and thought it was the issue, so he took the one off the old waste box that had been recently thrown in the trash, and attached it. Didn't make any difference, but it was very confusing, because even the tech at Sharp(John P) didn't know about the waste box difference.

Finally talked to our DSS and he's certain it's like an old set of Christmas lights, if one goes out, they all go out; so one trips 'em all. He suggested to reseat the connection on the machine, and then the board, and see what happens. After that, replace the PCU board.

This is also only the 2nd time in 20+ years that he's heard of someone having this error.

We have seen the "After turning off the power, install the drum unit (Y,M,C,Bk)" twice now. Once in Oct. of 2024 and in another machine it has been seen since April of 2024. We replaced the entire Drum Positioning unit in the first copier from a used machine and it has never came back. Today we replaced the same part in the second machine that has shown this error in April 24, July 24 and then today. We brought the part back from the field and installed it on our machne and the error appeared on the display. This is not avaible as a unit so we wil need to track down what is bad in the unit. J60 in the Parts Guide.

Our tech reseated all of the connections in it, including the PCU PWB connection for it, and it hasn't returned since.

My first thing after reseating things (if that doesn't help) is to swap out all 4 switches (#8) just to be safe. I just wish it showed up as more of an error code and/or showed in a log somewhere. If you can get the wiring harness, go for that as well if you want to be safe; I wouldn't imagine it's going to cost much.
