    MX-4101N Data Security Kit Uninstallation

We just got in an MX-4101N with a data security kit installed. My manager would like it removed. I've swapped the ROM from a junk machine with the MX-FR11U ROM in the secured machine to be given a A0-15 error, which is not listed in the service manual. I cannot find a manual for the MX-FR11U anywhere on the IDNC. My thinking is the machine needs to explicitly be told the security kit has been removed. Can anyone help me with this issue?

    BULLETIN MFP-SB-321R
    5 OF 5
    30 Trouble code related:
Settings have been modified so that if BOOT ROM of general version is installed
when the product key of the data security kit option is valid, the "A0-15" trouble is output.

the above is from a rom update bulletin for the mx4101n series, fw version 0210J2. since you have A0-15 error and you installed regular rom, deleting product key from copier should make it work ?

I would think a firmware update to latest non-dsk should be done. The firmware is changed for the dsk when it is installed. dsk kit comes with usb drive with the dsk fw on it besides the 2 dsk rom chips.

If you want the DSK removed, you must remove the DSK program 1 & 2 chips on the MFP board. Then, install the normal Program 1 &2 chips to the MFP board and perform a firmware update.

Please let me know if it works. I heard it was more involved and a bit of a hassle. I forgot the steps that I was told, because it was to much of a hassle to even consider.

I'll give this a shot this afternoon after I clear a few service calls. I'll update you on the results.

My opinion of data security kits.
Once a DSK has been married to a machine it is permanent, I do not tell my sales people, or fellow techs other wise, even though,(it may be possible).
Defeating security or being able to roll it back, breaks the definition of security. If the machine is used.. Then the customer needs to be informed, that this machine has the extra kit, at extra cost. Or, your company, will write off the extra, knowing it has been paid for once already (someway, somehow), and move the machine out the door. Long story short, resell the mach with the kit, if possible, if not bite the bullet, sell the machine with the kit, GET CLICKS, make money.

I'll take that a little further. I'd get salesman that wanted to totally reconfigure a used machine, and I would encourage them to sell it as is. It just looks crappy to have the knocks and covers missing where an accessory was at. And then you've got a used accessory that will probably stay on the shelf until it's thrown out. Sell it as-is. It's a complete working package. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
              1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
              2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
              3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
              4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
              5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

Did you ever give this a try?

Had a issue with a DSK once, from what we were told, you would have to re-chip the whole machine, the DSK marries to the mach, and takes a lot to clear it out. this was from Sharp and a field rep.

If there are EEPROM chips on the machine each will need to be replaced as the they have been written to with security. I had a MX-M453 that had one broken EEPROM after installing a MX-FR23U and the machine was useless until I got a complete set of EEPROMs (MFP,SCU, PCU) from Sharp reprogrammed with the information from the security kit. Took 3 1/2 weeks to get them back.
So theroetically one could put non-secure ROMs on the MFP PWB and change all the EEPROMs on the machine with fresh ones; however, with color machines I don't know if that can be done.

This is the simplest and most correct answer. The firmware update obviously needs to be for the regular engine version, not the DSK.

This is why we save every stock chip we remove when we install a DSK. If you need a set of chips I can get you fixed up for a small fee.
