I do not have my book but I believe that is a laser code or a scanner lock code.
And Star Trek was just a tv show...yeah right!

Yes it's a problem with the scanner carriage. Probably, as mentioned, the scanner lock. I usually break the lock out so it doesn't get turned back by accident. I have also seen the scanner not able to move in it's high speed mode (when it moves over to the ADF glass) because the rail needed to be oiled. A lot of times this also contributes to a noise when the scanner moves back home.
I will not give you service manuals or firmware.

Another thing to check is dirt on scanner unit - mirrors, lamp, original glass (machine side).

I'll never ask if I didn't check user manual, service manual, parts list, BSI/TNI/TAD... web, existing threads.

Try cleaning and lubing the scanner rail. If that doesn't work, I would replace the scanner motor. I've had to replace several of them.
