Toshiba e-Studio 230 - Stuck at boot screen & possible HDD failure

    Good morning,
I've just had an issue with my e-Studio 230, after trying to scan the touch screen became unresponsive, turned the machine off at switch but now it will not go past the boot screen.

    - Upon turn on, it now does not get past the grayscale image of the copier on the touch screen
    - I heard a clicking from the HDD
    - I've removed the HDD and tried to mount on PC, it says it is unreadable and there is loud clicking from the drive (WD400 40GB), a usual sign of HDD failure to me
    - I've tried to start copier without the HDD but same problem

If somebody could advise how I might be able to rectify this problem that would be fantastic.

    Thanks,
    Sam

    edit:

I've replaced the drive with a spare 20GB I had about, it now gets past the screen I described above, but then it goes to call for service.

How would I format this drive for use, as I assume that is now the problem - do I need the firmware?

    Thanks

You need the firmware to reload on the HDD.

    The steps are as follows
clear + 3 at power on option 3
    power off and load firmware
power off then 08-947 then 08-690-2 start
power off and on and it should be ready to go.

I think this needs a 40-80 gig hdd but I do not have book in front of me right now.
And Star Trek was just a tv show...yeah right!

Thanks Mr Spock that is awesome. I do have the Service Handbook, and I could only find the section about 4+9 on power on and do HDD Update, so thank you so much for giving me a great step by step. I will now continue the hunt for the firmware.

Re: Toshiba e-Studio 230 - Stuck at boot screen & possible HDD failure

I'm having some problems if somebody might be able to further assist.

        - I replaced HDD with a WD 200GB
        - clear + 3 at power on option 3 - completes

        - I have formatted a USB drive to FAT (not fat 32) its 512MB.
        - I have loaded firmware in every combination I can think of, but it gets to the Download Storage Firmware Update Mode, where you are supposed to be able to select 0 - 6, and while the 0-6 are there, there is no other writing on the screen. (I have waited over 3 minutes as per manual)

        - In the root directory of USB drive I have
        dlFirmWare_205_455
        firmImage0.bin
        hdd.bin
        T470MWW.18
        T471SLGWW.06

Is the HDD too large? Or am I doing something incorrect with the setup of the USB drive.

        Thank you,
        Sam

Re: Toshiba e-Studio 230 - Stuck at boot screen & possible HDD failure

200gb is too large. For this one the largest would be 80gb.
Also the firmware files you have are the wrong ones.
          the files should be

          1
          2
          3
          4
          rom.bin
          sysfirm.bin

and the firmware should look like this when done.
          JPN: T371SY0JXXX
          UC: T371SY0UXXX
          EUR: T371SY0EXXX
          Others: T371SY0XXXX

Thanks Mr Spock, looks like I've sourced the wrong firmware and I don't have an IDE drive small enough.
Thanks for all your help...not sure what I'll do from here!

              Follow up:

With the 200GB drive still installed I was about to format the drive by 08-690. (I have done nothing with the firmware)

The copier then booted in to normal operation and I have been able to copy and fax.

Network printing, scan to file and TopAccess still not working. Is this a limitation of not copying installation/firmware files?

Also trying to shut down by, User Functions -> User -> Shutdown, says Not Allowed At This Time - which is something new.

A 40G HDD is normally used in the E-BRIDGE 1 machines, after F/W update 08-947 and 08-693 should be performed, to be able to Print, the machine will require an IP address etc (assuming it has the Dongle), if you were able to access 'TOP ACCESS' before the unit failed, maybe in the URL History of your PC the IP address of the machine may still be obtainable, if so enter the details in the machine after the 'Network Initializing' message goes away by accessing Admin >123456>Network >IP ADDRESS settings (for Printing) then access the machine via your PC using 'TOP ACCESS' > MAINTENANCE > NETWORK for the rest.

You need the correct firmware on the machine so all have the same. then it will be all hunky dory.
It didn't say that I couldn't do it in the manual.

Yay, I have obtained the correct firmware files and the copier is now back to its old self! Thanks to everybody!

I only updated options 1,2 & 3, (HDD update, UI Data Update, System Firmware Update).

Should I also update 0, 4, 5 & 6? (OS Update, NIC Firmware Update, Machine Firmware Update)

You can update all by press key "Start" if you have newer FW.
Update all, its good, consistency and stability.

lets check your FW on e230

Thanks aalex. I have been able to update 0, 5 & 6, but was unable to update the NIC firmware as it failed twice.

The current versions I have installed are :

                        08-924: v027.0003
                        08-933: v015.0011
                        08-900: T371SY0U350
                        08-903: 371M-14
                        08-905: 371S-06
                        08-916: 2.03P

I am having some issues with Network Initializing, and need to turn copier off and on again for it to work correctly, so perhaps there is a problem with my NIC, or an incompatibility somewhere.
