Workcentre 7835, change from metered to sold

We've bought a secondhand Xerox Workcentre 7835 copier, and I see from the configuration report that it's on a "metered" service plan.
We haven't taken over the service plan from the previous owner and have no intention of getting a service plan.

My worry is what will happen when it runs of of toner and other supplies: will the machine reject "sold" toner and ask for an activation code when changing from "metered" to "sold" supplies?
Or is this just the case when changing the oposite way (from "sold" to "metered")?

Thanks in advance for any information on this issue!

Metered toner works in a sold machine, but not the other way around, if you put sold toner in a metered machine it will change the machine to metered mode, and therefore need an metered supplies service plan pin

Thanks for your feedback, but are you sure it's not the opposite? That sold toner works in a metered machine but not the other way around?
Why would a metered machine being fed a sold toner ask for a metered service plan pin when it's already in metered mode?

From my understanding, only metered toner may be used in a machine that has been set to use metered toner. Metered toner is usually cheaper and it is used with Xerox's metered toner maintenance program. A metered toner machine should not be able to accept "sold" or "non-metered" toner. To convert the machine to use "sold" or "non-metered" toner there is usually a conversion that needs to be done through Xerox corp. On some older machines, this can simply be a code # generated by Xerox based on the machine's serial # and current meter reading. Some machines it requires a digital file to be uploaded to the machine called a "snippit" also generated by Xerox based on the machine's serial # and current meter reading. Some machines require a pre-programmed chip that was created by Xerox using the machine's serial # and meter reading and installed on the supply (in place of it's current chip, or CRUM). In most cases, once this code, snippit or chip has been created, the change must take place within 500 prints of the total meter reading or it will not work. Going from Sold or Non-Metered back to Metered usually only takes installing a Metered supply item in the machine and it simply flips back to being Metered again. Once converted to Non-Metered if a metered toner is again installed you have to go through the process again to convert it back to Non-Metered in order to use Non-Metered supplies again.

My company uses non-metered toner so in some cases we have to do this conversion process involving Xerox tech support. Once done, our techs have to go through the customer's supplies to ensure they don't have any more Metered toner on hand or they can inadvertently set the machine back to Metered mode.
