We have been running into a lot of trouble on the new D-series machines (new versions of the 4110 / 4112) with false toner empty messages.
If you run into this, first: Once the machine thinks the toner bottle is empty (even if its still full) the chip on the cartridge will report that is now an empty cartridge and it will not be able to be used. (unless anyone out there knows where to get replacement crum chip)
Before installing another new toner, remove the toner dispensing unit. Remove the toner bottle motor. Clean the motor shaft. Remove coupling that was on the motor shaft and the spring behind it. Clean the coupling (the gear that makes contact with the toner bottle to spin the auger inside the toner cartridge) and file the inside of the coupling just a little bit so it slides on the motor shaft better. Stretch out the spring to about twice its original length. Reassemble and install the toner dispenser.
With the toner bottle still out of the machine, reach in your arm and push in the coupling a number of times. It should spring back each time. (originally it would hang back so that it was not contacting the toner bottle)
Install a new toner and you're done.
Make sure you instruct the user to shake the bottle well before installing and never store the bottles upright. Always lay flat to keep toner from settling to one side of the cartridge.
